Geohazard Working Group Identifies Priority Actions for Monsoon Preparedness
Lalitpur, 28 June 2026: The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), in collaboration with Disaster Preparedness Network Nepal (DPNet Nepal) and Plan International, organized a Geohazard Technical Working Group meeting on landslide risk assessment, community-based monitoring, and preparedness for Monsoon 2026 in Godawari, Lalitpur.
The meeting brought together 24 representatives from government agencies, development and humanitarian organizations, research institutions, and civil society.
Six technical presentations highlighted ongoing initiatives related to landslide susceptibility mapping, satellite and drone-based monitoring, machine learning, community-based early warning systems, government landslide mitigation programmes, and the newly developed GeoHazard Module of the BIPAD Portal.
Participants identified major challenges, including the absence of a centralized national landslide inventory, weak maintenance of installed early warning systems, delayed budget disbursement, fragmented institutional coordination, and increasing landslide risks caused by unplanned road construction.
The meeting recommended improved data sharing through the BIPAD Portal, mandatory landslide risk assessments for new road projects, sustainable financing for early warning systems, and stronger coordination among government agencies, local governments, communities, and development partners.
NDRRMA emphasized the need to regularly update information on “who is doing what and where” and encouraged participating organizations to coordinate anticipatory action, early warning dissemination, community mobilization, and emergency response throughout the monsoon season.
