This project, funded by the Green Climate Fund and implemented by UNDP with the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, aims to safeguard vulnerable mountain communities in Nepal’s Koshi and Gandaki river basins against escalating risks from Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs). It employs an integrated approach that includes technical capacity building, enhanced monitoring and early warning systems, and structural and nature-based interventions such as controlled lowering of water levels in four high-risk glacial lakes (Thulagi, Lower Barun, Lumding Tsho, and Hongu 2), afforestation, and protective infrastructure. Spanning seven years, the project is designed to directly benefit tens of thousands and indirectly protect nearly two million downstream residents, while integrating climate risk into development planning and supporting ecosystem resilience.
