Regional workshop on Communicating Flood Early Warning for Last Mile Connectivity

Summary

This document is a three-day regional workshop on 'Communicating flood early warning for last mile connectivity' that took place in Kathmandu, Nepal, from October 2-4, 2018. The workshop, organized by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), aimed to facilitate learning about 'early warning communication' by sharing experiences among key stakeholders. The 30 participants, representing hydromet agencies, disaster management authorities, and organizations involved in disaster risk reduction from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan, and the WMO, engaged in discussions on gaps in early warning communication, gender-responsive and socially inclusive solutions, and opportunities for collaboration. Country-wise presentations and group discussions identified strengths, weaknesses, and potential solutions in three domains: technical, institutional/governance, and socio-cultural. The workshop participants agreed to contribute case studies on good practices in flood early warning communication from their respective countries, intending to develop a framework for regional sharing, replication, and upscaling across the Hindu Kush Himalayan region.
