Enhancing Flood Preparedness in Nepal

This report addresses the impact of atmospheric warming on the Hindu Kush-Himalayan region, leading to the formation of meltwater lakes on glaciers. The subsequent risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) poses a serious threat to communities downstream. The study, focusing on Nepal, records 14 GLOF events and identifies hundreds of potentially unstable glacial lakes. Despite challenges in predicting specific occurrences, the report emphasizes the urgency of regular monitoring, proposing intensive studies on prioritized lakes like Tsho Rolpa and Imja Tsho. Recommendations include collaborative efforts for data archival, refinement of vulnerability assessments, and the development of a national strategy for risk reduction, with the broader goal of a region-wide policy for GLOF risk reduction in the Hindu Kush-Himalayas.
