Five days Sphere Training of Trainers (ToT) was organized by DPNet-Nepal in coordination with Sphere Nepal and Sphere Geneva on 9th -13th February 2020. The five days training was facilitated by the Lead Facilitator of the event Mr. Subhashis Roy, whereas Mr. Raju Thapa, General Secretary of DPNet-Nepal and Dr. Eba Pasha, co-writer of Sphere Handbook, Mr. Tristan Hale, Learning and training Manager, Sphere Geneva also provided their time to facilitate the training. Mr. Anil Pokhrel, Executive Chief of the National Disaster Risk Management Authority also provided his valuable time to observe the ToT and encouraged participants. Altogether 21 participants disaggregated as 8 females and 13 males participated from various organizations. One participant was from Indonesia.

The first day of the event was initiated with the informal inaugural ceremony. Board members of DPNet-Nepal and representatives from contributing agencies were also present as an invitee in an inaugural session. Mr. Raju Thapa, General Secretary of DPNet-Nepal welcomed the participants of the ToT. He thanked the Sphere Coordination committee and contributing agencies for their support in making this event happen. Mr. Subhashis Roy shared the brief introduction of the ToT and welcomed participants of the event. Mr. Mani Kumar, country director of Christian Aid deliver remarks on behalf of contributing agencies and shared the importance of Sphere standard and his best wishes for the successful execution of the event. Mr. Sanjeeb Kumar Shakya, Senior Humanitarian Manager from Save the Children shared his remarks stating his experience in applying the child protection principles, the companion standard of Sphere. Mr. Sushil Bhandari,  from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) in his remarks shared that there is a need for contextualizing the Sphere standard in Nepal. He also shared the initiation of MoHA regarding capacity building programs. He requested everyone to include information about human resources and other activities in bipad.gov.np. Mr. Ram Prasad Bhattarai, Vice Chairperson of DPNet-Nepal shared his inaugural remarks and thanked all contributing agencies and shared his best wishes to all participants of the training and closed the informal inaugural session. Ms. Luna Khadka, Program Coordinator of DPNet-Nepal, moderated the informal inaugural session and shared that DPNet-Nepal had planned to conduct Sphere training since the time Sphere handbook 2018 was launched in December 2018 and congratulated selected participants of the ToT. 

The first day of the training included sessions on introduction to the sphere and ToT, Pre TOT workshops and the Sphere training package, training/trainer evaluation, how to give feedback, Mini workshops on Sphere Training Package (STP)-2,3,4,7. Day-2 included sessions on mini-workshop-STP, 8, 9 and 10, humanitarian standard partnership and 5 minutes presentation by each participant. Similarly, the session on Sphere Cash and Market, adult learning theories were included in day-3 and the participants were paired for maxi-participant led sessions. After that, participants were given time to prepare for their presentations. On day-4, Dr. Eba Pasha, who was directly involved in revising the STP-10, Health was present in the event to share her experience and learning. She also provided her time to address some questions. The sessions on day-4 were facilitated by the participants on various STP of Sphere Standard.  On day-5, two sessions were led by participants and then a session on the training checklist and measuring training impact was conducted. Mr. Tristan Hale, Learning and Training Manager from Sphere Geneva provided his time for sharing the demo of the Sphere website and shared some relevant information and addressed some concerns. After that, the participants were asked to develop their action plan. In overall, the training sessions were very interactive, different teaching methods and skills were used in different sessions.

In the closing session, two participants shared their learning and experience about the training and thanked DPNet-Nepal for providing this opportunity. They also thanked the Lead Facilitator Mr. Subhashis Roy and praised his facilitation skills. Mr. Raju Thapa, General Secretary of DPNet-Nepal thanked Mr. Roy for his contribution and participants for their active participation. He shared that DPNet-Nepal has been working to institutionalize Sphere Standard in Nepal. He also informed participants about the upcoming Provincial level sphere training and sensitization program and said that the participant from this ToT may have an opportunity to facilitate the event. He also shared about the ongoing translation of Sphere Handbook and the translation validation workshop. The program was closed after providing the ToT attended certificates to all participants and token of love to Mr. Roy.

The event was financially supported by different contributing agencies namely, Action Aid, Caritas, Christian Aid, Dan Church Aid, International Nepal Fellowship, Lutheran World Federation, OXFAM, Plan International, Save the Children, UNICEF and World Vision International.
