Landslides claim seven lives
Seven persons were killed, while one has gone missing and eight others were hurt when landslides swept away their houses in separate incidents in three different districts across the country in the past 24 hours. Three persons were killed when a landslide, triggered by heavy downpour, swept away a house at Reep village in Chowk Chisapani VDC-8 at 7:30 am today.
The deceased have been identified as Sabitri Joshi (30), her son Shankar (13) and Sujan Luitel (20), chief of the Armed Police Force Manakamana Battalion. Luitel had gone to Joshi’s house to collect the sacred grass (kush). Sabitri’s daughter Laxmi sustained minor injury when the mudslide buried her, said Gautam Mishra, police Inspector. The landslide also buried a house and several domestic animals that belonged to one Bal Krishna Joshi. Locals and the police are involved in the rescue of the victims.
Meanwhile, two members of a family were killed and three others were hurt when landslide buried their house at Kathare in Barbhanjyang VDC-8 at 8 am today. Dev Kumari BK (63) and her daughter-in-law Cheej Maya (27) were killed in the incident, said the Bhanu Area Police Office. Other family members, Samjhana BK (22), Suk Bahadur BK (27) and Krishna Bahadur BK (6), were hurt. The injured are undergoing treatment in the local medical hall.
The flood fury in the Kalimati river in Chisapani-6 swept away three houses this morning, the police said.
Madhu Maya Nepali (30), a resident of Tarkughat-7 of Lamjung, was killed when landslide swept away her house this morning. Samundra Nepali (20) is missing, while Sita Nepali (26) got injured. Sita has been undergoing treatment in Lamjung Community Hospital.
Khemraj Rai (49), a resident of Tamku-8, Sankhuwasabha was killed when landslide buried him last night.
His family members Ram Kumari (25) and Kopila (14) are undergoing treatment in the local health post.
Locals said that ten families in Sisuwa VDC were displaced due to the landslide triggered by heavy downpour. Ten families including the families of Sancha Kumar Rai, Jung Bahadur Rai, Gamanta Rai, Jyoti Maya Rai and Mukti Prasad Rai were displaced due to the landslide.
