Thousand displaced in Sunsari
Flooding in Koshi River has damaged two spurs, putting around a dozen VDCs at the risk of inundation. The flooded river caused the embankment to crumble after Spur No. 1026 and 1117 were damaged.
More than 30,000 villagers in a dozen VDCs in Sunsari district including Paschim Kuswaha, Pipara, Haripur, Madhuvan, and Shripur have been displaced due to inundation caused by the dam collapse in Koshi River. The river has changed its course since 4/5 days before cutting the land.
Due to the overflow of the river three VDCs have totally been inundated. The police suspects that the children from most of the houses might have missed in the flood. It is impossible to reach the inundated houses; people are waiting at Mahendra highway. Most of the displaced people are carried to Bhagawati Secondary School in Inaruwa.
Because of the closure of most of the doors in the Koshi barrage caused the flooding in the villages. In the initiatives of the local administration, 54 doors out of 56 have been opened to give outlet to the water. The locals began to flee the villages after 8 p.m. on 18th August as the water started to swamp the villages.
The rescue team of police and others are continually supporting the displaced people to go to safer places.
